Cheniere was honored to welcome Under Secretary of Energy Kyle Haustveit to its Sabine Pass Liquefaction facility in Cameron Parish, La. on Oct. 14.

Haustveit met with site leadership, toured the 1,000-plus-acre facility and hosted local media. He highlighted the growing role liquefied natural gas (LNG) plays in America’s energy leadership and economic prosperity, as well as the Department of Energy’s support for the industry’s continued expansion.

“Energy is not a sector of the economy; it is the sector of the economy,” Haustveit said, adding that LNG is an increasingly important part of that sector. “Everything is built on top of that.”

It was the Under Secretary’s first visit to an LNG-producing facility, and he was impressed by the size and scale of Sabine Pass, the first LNG export facility in the Lower 48 and one that helped spark the current LNG buildout on the Gulf Coast.

“This facility is the largest LNG facility in the United States and currently the largest active facility in the world, providing a thousand jobs for hardworking Americans,” Haustveit told reporters. “We’re projecting that more than half a million jobs will be supported by LNG in the early 2030s.”

Haustveit, a third-generation energy worker from North Dakota, was in Louisiana to attend the 22nd Americas LNG Summit in Lake Charles.

“Louisiana is the epicenter for LNG, Haustveit said. “If Louisiana were a country, it would be the largest LNG exporter in the world, at north of 10 (billion cubic feet) per day.”
