Overview

Surrounded by thriving Louisiana wetlands, blessed with an enviable view of the Gulf of Mexico and the Texas border, our Sabine Pass facility is a marvel of modern infrastructure. Through sunny days and some stormy nights, Sabine Pass Liquefaction (SPL) has reliably and safely produced more than 2,000 cargoes since 2016, setting a new standard of excellence in the LNG field. These cargoes have powered factories and homes around the world.

Sabine Pass currently has six fully operational liquefaction units — or trains” — each capable of producing ~5 mtpa of LNG. These six trains have been brought online ahead of schedule, and all within budget. With all six trains complete, the aggregate nominal production capacity of SPL is approximately 30 mtpa of LNG, and we process more than 4.7 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas into LNG. To give you some perspective, if we added up each of the components for the six trains, we would need 361,000 cubic yards of concrete, 89,000 tons of structural steel, almost 400 miles of pipe and over 3,600 miles of electrical cable. That’s enough cable to stretch from Houston all the way to Alaska.

Sabine Pass has multiple advantages as an LNG export facility. It is located less than four nautical miles from the Gulf of Mexico, allowing for convenient access and egress for vessels. It has multiple pipeline connections to interstate and intrastate pipelines, providing redundancy and diversity in natural gas supply. And with five storage tanks — each of which could hold a 747 airplane inside — and three berths, the infrastructure at Sabine Pass is designed to support its high volume of LNG shipments.

Through access to an extensive pipeline network, Sabine Pass has the ability to access natural gas from every supply source in the continental United States east of the Rocky Mountains and works with dozens of natural gas producers and infrastructure companies to purchase natural gas supply and reliably transport the supply to the terminal.

Sabine Pass expansion opportunities

Sabine Pass Stage 5 Expansion Project

We are developing an expansion project (the SPL Expansion Project”) adjacent to our existing Sabine Pass Liquefaction facility in Cameron Parish, Louisiana. The project will consist of:

  • Two large-scale liquefaction trains, each with a nameplate capacity of approximately 7 mtpa and a maximum production capacity of approximately 8.43 mtpa
  • Boil-off gas (BOG) reliquefaction unit with a maximum reliquefaction capacity of approximately 0.90 mtpa
  • Two full-containment, above ground 220,000 m³ LNG storage tanks with loading capabilities
  • Appurtenant connecting facilities and piping

The SPL Expansion Project is expected to benefit from the significant existing infrastructure at Sabine Pass Liquefaction and contemplates various enhancements to its existing capabilities, including optimized ship loading at the existing marine facilities. Additionally, the feedgas related to the SPL Expansion Project is expected to be transported via a combination of new and existing pipelines currently supplying the Sabine Pass Liquefaction facility.

We have engaged Bechtel Energy, Inc. to complete a Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) study of the SPL Expansion Project.

On February 29, 2024, Sabine Pass filed an Application with the FERC for authorization to site, construct and operate the Sabine Pass Stage 5 Expansion Project. The development of the SPL Expansion Project, and any necessary supporting infrastructure related to natural gas supply and LNG demand, is subject to receipt of all required regulatory approvals and permits, and sufficient commercial and financing arrangements before a final investment decision (“FID”) can be reached.

You are invited to participate in the FERC process. Please reference FERC Docket No. CP24-75-000 when searching the FERC’s eLibrary. Additional information can be found at the below websites.
